So you’ve spent the last 24 hours on a blood, sweat and tears frantic writing slog to the finish line. You’ve printed, bound and handed in your dissertation and the last three years of University has come to an end. So what now?

Travel enables you earn while you learn

Travelling doesn’t mean that you are simply postponing your life and career decisions until you return with a fully stamped passport and less money. There are plenty of working holiday options you could do to earn a little money on your way, such as teaching, animal conservation, or using your existing skills.

Travel will help you decide your career path

Maybe you took a degree course in Nursing, Marketing or Sociology; however if you decide to teach foreign students on your travels, you may find that a different career path is the right choice for you.

University courses teach you not only about the subject itself, but also provide you with valuable transferrable skills. Remember that a change of career choice is a completely normal decision, you’re still young and the world is your oyster. Embrace it.

Travel is a great addition to your resume

Many graduates finish their studies and dive head first in to searching for a job. Chances are you’ve spent a long time studying already (some as much as 19 years in education); and it’s important to remember that there’s no rush to find a job straight away. Take a breather after all your hard work at University, go travelling and experience all that the world has to offer – there will still be jobs when you return.

Travelling is an excellent addition to any CV  and demonstrates to future employers that you can use your initiative, have planning skills, are resourceful, ambitious, want to learn, are adaptable, have money skills, independence… the list goes on…

_ _ _ _ _

There’s no better time to travel than while you are young, healthy and have no commitments such as family or bills to hold you back. Maybe you want to travel but are held back by your fears or worries….

  • What if I get homesick?
  • How will I cope with living out of my backpack?
  • What if I don’t make any friends on my travels?

Well the answer is that you’ll never know if you never try!

If you find yourself flicking through the glossy pages of the travel brochures wishing and wondering what it’s really like to be there – book the ticket and just go! It might just be the best decision you’ll ever make! Break your routine and do what you’ve always wanted to do. It’s never too late.
